Westview Disturbed by Westview Taskforce, Inc. Westview tenants are still shocked and disturbed by RIOC’s sudden decision to block ground-lease extension. We believe such decision is completely misguided. Westview tenants and owners have negotiated an agreement that provides the most affordable conversion in the history of New York City affordable housing. Indeed, 80% of tenants are expected to become first-time homeowners and be able to stay based on their current incomes. Rents will be protected for life. Conversion will generate the $15 million so badly needed for building rehabilitation. And RIOC will be paid more than the amount it had received from Eastwood and Octagon. If the current impasse continues, this win/win/win/win situation, achieved after years of struggle, will quickly turn into an unprecedented catastrophe. Westview’s 140 lowincome tenants will be forced out in 2-3 years, as they won’t be able to pay the forthcoming rent hikes mandated to maintain the building. All others will be displaced as soon as the building leaves the Mitchell-Lama program and becomes market rental. RIOC was created to develop this Island, not to destroy its community. There is not a single reason why the ground lease should not extended now. We urgently call upon Commissioner VanAmerongen and Mr. Shane to immediately schedule semiweekly meetings with tenants and owners in the same room, without pre-conditions, so that a resolution could be found. |
