• The Residents Association and the Community
Emergency Response Team (CERT) are planning a blood drive to
coincide with Roosevelt Island Day, June 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One
lucky donor will win dinner for two at Angel’s Italian Restaurant
(First Avenue at 62nd Street). You can sign up any Saturday morning
today through June 2 at the Farmer’s Market, or call RIRA President
Matthew Katz at 212-935-7534.
• A Duane Reade Drug Store will open this
summer in Southtown, according to David Kramer of the Hudson
Companies, one of the developers.
• Market-rate rentals have begun in the fourth
Southtown building, dubbed Riverwalk Landing.
• Verdant Power now has five turbines in the east channel
just north of the Roosevelt Island Bridge. Each has a different
internal gearing ratio in an effort to discover the ideal setup
before hundreds are built for a full roll-out. Turbines 4 and 5 are
supplying power to Motorgate lighting; one carries a test load; the
rest are supplying power to Gristede’s. The project is known as RITE
– for Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy.
