Special Election - And Other Briefs... Governor Eliot Spitzer has set a special election for Tuesday, June 5, for voters to choose a replacement for Pete Grannis, who resigned his 65th District Assembly seat to become Commissioner of the State Department of Environmental Conservation. The Democratic candidate, Micah Kellner, has already been campaigning (see ad, page 5) in the heavily Democratic district. Republicans have not yet named their contender. The New York City Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is taking applications from City residents ages 14 to 21 for summer jobs, at www.nyc.gov/dycd. The deadline is May 18. PS/IS 217 is looking for speakers for its 13th annual Career Day on Friday, June 8. Speakers in all fields are encouraged to volunteer to make short speeches telling seventh- and eighth-graders about what they do (or did) for a living. For information, call Susan Cohen, the Guidance Counselor, at 212-980-0294, ext. 3230. The Beacon Program is running a free GED Course (see ad, page 13). The Main Street Theatre and the Cultural Center were flooded last weekend when drains backed up during the noreaster. Nina Wintringham and Roberta Hershey spent a good part of the weekend bailing it out and drying it out. |
