Southtown Gets New Affordable Apartments

Twenty-five apartments in Southtown building #4 will rent at affordable rates, according to an advertisement running in this issue of The WIRE (page 4). Another 40 will rent at market rates, with all other units in the new building going to Sloan-Kettering and New York University for faculty housing, according to David Kramer of Hudson Corporation, which is partnered with The Related Companies in the development of Southtown’s nine buildings.

The 25 affordable units include 3 studios at $887 per month, 14 one-bedroom apartments at $949, and 8 with two bedrooms at $1,142, with qualifying annual incomes ranging from a minimum of $37,223 for studios to a maximum $56,720 for a four-person household in a two-bedroom unit. The ad contains additional information about income ranges.

The WIRE ad provides an address for securing application materials. Applications must be postmarked by Sunday, May 20. The ad indicates that current residents of the area covered by Manhattan Community Board 8, including Roosevelt Island, will receive preference for half the available affordable units, and there are other preferences for municipal employees and households that include individuals with mobility, hearing, or visual impairments.

The market-rate units become available in May, Kramer said.
