The fireboat John D. McKean was deployed to the west channel recently in a salute to FDNY Firefighter Joey DiBernardo, who had survived a Morris Heights house fire with a five-story escape by rope, and was recovering across the river in New York Hospital. Two other firefighters died jumping from the building. While the fireboat shot red, white, and blue streams, DeBernardo's comrades unfurled a sign from the top of Island House; they were later interviewed by Channel 11.
