The RIOC Column
January has certainly reminded all of us that it's winter in New York City. Fortunately, Roosevelt Island has not experienced any weather-related problems as of this writing. We'll keep our fingers crossed. Our grounds people immediately dealt with the dusting of snow we received last week and as a consequence we suffered no inconveniences. Our staff does an outstanding job on snow removal and we are grateful for their dedication. The New Year brings the first RIOC Board meeting of 2005, where we will greet two new Island-resident members, Alberteen Anderson and Michael Shinozaki, at the January 26 meeting at 9:30 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Center. Both Ms. Anderson and Mr. Shinozaki are eager to get to work. Please join me in welcoming them to their first working session as members of the RIOC Board. No doubt you have all read their profiles before in these pages. This month's Board meeting will focus on internal RIOC matters, where the Board will be asked to approve two employee-related items as well as set the Board meeting schedule for the rest of the year. Many of you have called or e-mailed regarding the departure of Sari Dickson, who acted ably as my assistant and RIOC operations manager since my arrival here in 2003. Sari was an invaluable aide and undertook many important projects that will enhance the Island for years to come. Sari left because she was presented with a career opportunity at the State Division of Housing and Community Renewal that would draw on her experience learned at RIOC as well as her expertise in housing issues. Sari came to RIOC from DHCR and her return is our loss and their gain. We wish her all the best. RIOC has been working on repairing the concrete ramp off the Island. Most of the work is completed with the exception of some further touch-up work. Finally, stay warm and safe until Spring!
