Plaque to Be Dedicated for 9/11 Victims
The small grove of trees just west of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd will soon have a bronze plaque memorializing Roosevelt Islands victims of the September 11 terrorist attack on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
The plaque is a project of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association. It will be placed at the base of a flowering cherry tree that was specially planted, in October, as part of the memorial. The plaque is to be dedicated Sunday, April 21, at 2:00 p.m., in a ceremony that will include brief remarks by victims family members and dignitaries, including Assemblymember Pete Grannis and City Council Speaker Gifford Miller. Islanders Juanita Fleming and Deborah Drucker will sing, and the artist William West will present one of his works to the FDNY Special Operations Command headquartered on the Island. The ceremony is to be followed by refreshments, and the Residents Association Common Council members organizing the event are asking their fellow residents to bring a dessert. The baked goods are being coordinated by Margie Smith, who can be reached at 813-1515.
