Stewart Slammed for MiniCondo Abstention
A Rivercross resident criticized RIRA President Patrick Stewart for his June 8 abstention when the RIOC Board of Directors voted to move forward on the minichools condo conversion project.
Ed Igel, speaking with obvious anger, told Stewart during the
public comment portion of last week's RIRA Common Council
meeting, "You were present at the March, 1999, meeting when
dozens of people spoke against the project, when it was
originally proposed by Dr. Blue. An informal vote was
taken. There was not one not one person in favor
of the project. You were here when a Rivercross [Board]
member presented a resolution, specifically speaking against the
project. There was not one Island resident that I've ever
heard at any meeting speak in favor of the minischool
project. Yet, you failed failed to vote against
it. You abstained. I think that this speaks very
poorly about your responsibility, about your fiduciary
responsibility, and about executing the will of the people on
this Island. I therefore propose you resign immediately
because you represent nobody but yourself or the RIOC Board,
which is not the purpose of this organization, and further, if
you don't resign...
Stewart responded, "I suggest you consult Roberts Rules of Order to find out what an abstention means, and if you don't understand what Roberts Rules of Order says, the Borough President of the Borough of Manhattan has a parliamentarian that you would be free to call. Thank you." Igel shot back, still angry, "Where would I find that in the dictionary? Under cowardice?" Stewart, chairing the Common Council session, went on to other public comments.
