Groups File Intent to Appeal on Southtown

Two groups have filed notices of intent to appeal a State Supreme Court decision on Southtown. The Alternative Southtown Design Committee, headed by Attorney Robert Chira, and Roosevelt Islanders for Responsible Southtown Development (RIRSD) are both making plans to raise funds for the continuing legal battle.

In a decision issued July 5 (and the subject of a WIRE extra issue that day), Justice Harold Tompkins ruled (erroneously, according to both sides in the case) that RIRSD had filed its petition too late; that is likely to be a subject of RIRSD's appeal. The Court ruled against Chira on the major points of his case, all of which are likely to be appealed.

[Residents who did not receive the July 5 WIRE extra edition delivered to their apartment door can pick one up at Montauk Credit Union; in buildings where it is known distribution failed, copies are included with this issue.]
