Southtown Plan Revealed

Just styrofoam for now. This model shows, from a Manhattan viewpoint, the form and placement of buildings proposed for Southtown by the architectural firm of Davis Brody Bond. It calls for nine structures ranging from three towers with a maximum height of 28 stories to six stepped designs with segments 8 to 16 floors in height. A review of the plan by Jeff Hochman appears on page 7, along with site diagrams and an additional photo of the model.

About three dozen Roosevelt Island residents heard plans for Southtown described last week in a Tuesday night session with the architects hired by The Related Companies. (Review of the plan, page 7.)

Chief architect Max Bond of Davis Brody Bond described the planning thus far as "conceptual," saying, "We will listen to your comments, and then try to refine these plans based on your comments." He then described a favored plan that would eventually see nine buildings on the Southtown site, which covers 19.3 acres between the Tramway and the Main Street split south of Rivercross.

Residents at the meeting raised questions about construction traffic, the housing "mix," community service space, commercial space.

There were no announcements about funding or other progress toward a start of construction. A phase one plan consisting of two buildings was discussed.
