Three Viewpoints: Getting Serious About
Self-Government | ||
|
On Tuesday, the Island voted decisively for elected self-governance and
professional community management. Newly re-elected Assemblymember Pete
Grannis has already introduced proposed legislation originally drafted by
the Maple Tree Group. And the start of a new term for Governor George Pataki
may produce some changes in his portfolio of appointments.
Meanwhile, dialogues continue about how Grannis's bill might be fine-tuned, what alternatives might be available, and just how best to leverage the current situation. To the left is WIRE Founding Publisher Jack Resnick's guest editorial on the Business Improvement District model as a possibility for the Island. We also present the thoughts of RIOC Board member David Kraut on his belief that the State of New York will require a role in any governmental structure for the Island. And new RIRA Common Council member Graham Cannon writes on the need for hard work to take advantage of the current situation and climate.
