The Delacorte Fountain

... The b/w reprint [below] is from my book, The Pedestrian
Revolution: Streets Without Cars, published in 1974 by
Random House. It shows a proposed development in Long Island
City with my firm's concept of a water jet at the foot of
Roosevelt Island. The color photo was taken by me some years
later when George Delacorte financed a temporary demonstration
which operated for several years until his death. The original
idea was to install it permanently in relation to the proposed
FDR Memorial which, unfortunately, was not realized. In my 1974
project, the jet pumps and chlorine filtration tank would have
been below the surface of the water as indicated in the drawing
and in conformity with the Lake Geneva jet in Switzerland, which
Delacorte wished to emulate. ...
